We are encouraged by the progress reflected in this year’s LEAP results and congratulate East Baton Rouge Parish School System’s students, educators, Superintendent Cole, and the School Board for the hard work that made these gains possible.

These results show that when schools invest in high-quality instruction, support great educators, and stay focused on student achievement, students benefit. That is worth celebrating.

At the same time, progress and proficiency are not the same thing.

While more students are meeting grade-level expectations than in previous years, far too many children are still not where they need to be academically. We celebrate this growth without also lowering our expectations for what our students deserve.

Our community has made important decisions over the past several years to improve public education, and these results demonstrate that those efforts are beginning to pay off. The challenge now is to sustain that momentum while remaining laser-focused on outcomes. Every school should continue to be held accountable for delivering a high-quality education.

The Baton Rouge Alliance for Students Action believes our students are capable of achieving at the highest levels. We are pleased to see the district moving in the right direction, and we continue pushing forward until every child has access to a school where they can thrive. Baton Rouge’s students deserve nothing less than excellence, and we must continue working together to ensure that today’s momentum becomes tomorrow’s standard.
