As the dust settles on election night 2022, we are profoundly grateful for the role our organization has had in this important and active election cycle. Since our inception nearly two years ago, the Baton Rouge Alliance for Students Action has been clear about two things: first, that an excellent education is every child’s birthright, and second, that our children deserve leaders who will work tirelessly to make that a reality. We recognize the importance of leadership, and for the past year, our team has worked to develop a pipeline of leaders and a policy platform that we believe would help to right the ship and set the East Baton Rouge School System on a course to better serve all students. Many of you have joined us in that effort and made your desires for students known. We are proud to do our work alongside so many dedicated community members.

We are proud of the amazing individuals that Baton Rouge Alliance for Students Action endorsed in offering themselves for public service to our students.

Election night by the numbers:

37,310 total Early Votes were cast in East Baton Rouge Parish
29,074 votes were cast within the EBR school system footprint
104,215 total votes were cast in the November 2022 school board election

Of the 9 endorsed candidates we’ve supported this cycle:

5 won Tuesday Night: Mark Bellue, Dadrius Lanus, Carla Powell, Cliff Lewis, Nathan Rust
2 will proceed to the December 10 Runoff: Shashonnie Steward & Patrick Martin

We know that the work of runoffs begins now. Despite that, our sights are still firmly set on what the future holds for East Baton Rouge Parish students and how their public school system can better serve their needs. We look forward to working with all of those elected to ensure that the needs of students and families are centered in policy decisions. The success of this school board will be critical to ensuring our city’s growth and vitality. We remain committed to partnering with the leaders our community has selected.
