A budget is a statement of values, and alongside hiring a superintendent, it’s the most important responsibility of the EBR School Board.

It’s encouraging that this year’s budget includes initiatives such as the tiered Student Achievement Stipend, which will reward teachers in struggling schools for making significant academic improvements. Every child’s birthright to an excellent education is only possible by recruiting and retaining talented educators.

While this budget is certainly an improvement, the process still needs significant refinement. Families must be engaged earlier and more meaningfully in the budgeting process to ensure their voices and concerns are heard and addressed. The budget should be clear and accessible, demonstrating how resources directly impact student outcomes.

As we move forward, it is crucial that we continue to prioritize transparency and community involvement. Together, we can ensure that every dollar truly reflects our shared values and commitment to providing a high-quality education for all students in Baton Rouge.
